My whole life I pretty much have had the worst love hate relationship with my blowdryer. I only used it on occasions when I was desperate to dry my hair and didn't have time to wait for it to airdry. But even then, I would immediately regret doing it because I pretty much looked like had stepped out into the most humid weather possible. I had my baby hairs flying everywhere and the ends looks frayed. Also, since I had naturally wavy hair, I would end up with some pieces that blow dried straight and some that were wavy; so overall it was a huge mess. And for those reasons, I put my blowdryer away to the farthest back corner underneath my sink. But recently I have learned some tips and tricks that made me love my blowdryer again so if want a nice slick blowout but don't want to spend hours trying to get it perfect then keep reading to learn how to get a perfect blowout in just 15 minutes.
I've also added links on each of the products I mention so you can easily find them!
Prep
Obviously we need to start with wet hair and I think one of the most important steps in prepping for your at home blowout is to make sure your hair is really really clean. Now I'm not suggesting that you shampoo twice or anything, but just make sure that you really work the shampoo in to get all of the dirt and oil out of your roots. I have often found that if my hair has even a little bit of dirt and oil residue, my hair style doesn't last as long. I also recommend using a thick conditioner or a hair mask on the ends of your hair to strengthen and nurture your hair before you blast it with drying heat.
Some of my favorite in shower hair products are the Garnier Fructis Treat Shampoo and Conditioner (I've talked about them in an Instagram post before and I've been using them ever since). The hair mask that I'm using at the moment is the Nuance Intense Hydration Hair Mask.
Then, once you get out of the shower, I like to towel dry my hair a little bit so that it isn't soaking wet. Trying to blow dry your hair when it is dripping with water will not only waste time, but will also damage the hair. If you are running short on time, a quick tousle with the towel should do the trick, but if you are not in a rush, I like to let my hair air dry just the slightest bit so that all of the extra water is already gone.
Product
After you wash your hair, you don't just want to go immediately in with the heat. Here are a few products that I swear by when blow drying my hair.
The first one is some kind of hair oil or leave in conditioner for the ends. I would use a hair oil on my wet hair even if I wasn't blow drying it, but it is super important to add some kind of cushion for your hair before you blow dry it. I only use a hair oil on my ends because I don't want to make my roots oily. If you prefer a leave in conditioner, you can run it through your ends and a little higher so that the hair dryer doesn't leave your hair dry and brittle. My favorite hair oil is the Bumble and Bumble Hairdressers Invisible Oil because it is the lightest hair oil I've tried that doesn't weigh my hair down once my hair dries. And every time I use it, I can feel how soft and smooth my hair becomes. I also have recently been into the CHI Leave in Conditioning Treatment because it feels like a thick cream on your hands, but leaves your hair feeling so incredibly light on the hair. It also makes a huge difference in the feel of my ends: they don't feel as dry or brittle when I use this. I only use this product when I come out of the shower because it might be a little thick to use on dry hair.
Next, I like to go in with the Briogeo Rosarco Blow Dry Perfection Heat Protection Cream because I want to make sure that I reduce the damage done to my hair by the heat. I will run this product through my roots all the way down to my ends. Whenever I put product in my roots, I always get a little nervous that it will make my hair greasy once its dry, but this product doesn't do that. This product is weightless and makes my hair look super smooth and soft without the frizz that usually follows when I'm done blowdrying my hair. Another similar product that I also have used in the past is the Briogeo Farewell Frizz Blow Dry Perfection Heat Protection Cream.
Finally, I think this next product has become my holly grail blowout essential. I think my hair feels lost when I don't have this product. I take it traveling with me and pretty much everywhere I go. I am convinced that the Argan Magic - Blow Straight Temporary Hair Straightener is a product from a different universe because it's that good. When I first saw this product in store, I was ready to try and debunk everything it claimed to do because it seemed nothing short of a miracle. But honestly, whenever I don't use this product, I can feel a difference. It claims that it will give you intense straight hair and styling control, and while I can't say that I end up with the same result as when I use a flat iron, my hair ends up a lot slicker and smoother when using this product. And besides that, this product also helps reduce the amount of time needed to blow dry your hair. So the upside to that is that you don't have to spend as much time on your hair and your hair then gets less intense heat put on it.
So while, this may sound like I'm weighing my hair down a load of unnecessary products, all of these products work well together to make the perfection concoction of sleek, smooth, and shiny hair.
Blowdry
Besides the products that help make blowdrying my hair easier, I found that I see the most results from the technique I use. Instead of pointing the blowdryer horizontally at me, raise the blowdryer over your head and point it straight down starting at your roots. This way, all of your hairs will drying facing downwards and there won't be any baby hairs flying around and your hair will dry faster because the blowdryer and gravity will push all of the water towards your ends. I basically split my hair into two pieces and repeat this process on both sides and then I push all my hair to the back and repeat. Finally, I flip my head over and again, with the blowdryer still facing downward, I dry the under side of my hair. I also turn down the heat on my hairdryer and make sure to blow dry my roots in an attempt to minimize frizz. Now you will have all of the tips and tricks to make blow-drying your hair extra easy next time.
